Connoisseurs and Academies, two series of works made by Karen Knorr in the mid 1980’s are about to appear in the book Connoisseurs & Academies, published by Kehrer this Spring. Works will be shown at Photo London 2024 with Sundaram Tagore Gallery and there will be book launch with Kehrer and Karen Knorr Studio in London during the period of the fair.

Karen Knorr’s photographic series Connoisseurs & Academies was photographed between 1986 and 2005 with an analog camera, her images let us venture into the intricate world of the history of museums and stately homes, of objects, paintings, connoisseurship, and the structures of academies. The use of animals as an allegorical motif is today embedded in Knorr’s practice, but they first appear in Connoisseurs, where a chimpanzee becomes the Genius of the Place. 

Karen Knorr Studio will be launching a small print sale to support the cost of the publication next month. The prints will be printed by Karen Knorr as archival colour ink prints as signed editions of ten. 20% will be going to Artist Support Pledge. Please watch this space!
