Through the medium of film and photography, this major exhibition considers how masculinity has been coded, performed, and socially constructed from the 1960s to the present day.

Examining depictions of masculinity from behind the lens, the Barbican brings together the work of over 50 international artists, photographers and filmmakers including Laurie Anderson, Sunil Gupta, Rotimi Fani-Kayode, Isaac Julien and Catherine Opie.

The oldest surviving product of a photographic process, the first known photograph, View from the Window at Le Gras, presents a fascinating insight into one of humanity’s well-established curiosities early on in the history of photography, the importance of recording the constructed environment. Throughout artistic mediums, the subject of architecture has framed the narratives and developments of some of history’s most defining moments.

Karen Knorr  will be exhibiting works from The Lanesborough series at Elephant West in London. “The Lanesborough” (once a hospital closed in the 1990’s) is one of the most expensive hotels in the world, where the wealthy 1% strive to live the celebrity lifestyle. Rooms come with butlers and the hotel is a themed fantasy palace where the special few can find happiness and fulfil all their desires of a perfect weekend in London.

The British’s attachment to their homes has continued to assert itself since the early nineteenth century, becoming an important component of their identity. The English language has invented the words comfort and comfortable, words imported into French because nothing better expressed the link between the well-being of soul and body and the domestic interior. What’s better than the theme of the home, the home so dear to the heart of the British, to highlight the richness, the diversity and the development of photography across the Channel? Home Sweet Home brings together thirty artists of all generations who allow us to share the intimacy and the everyday life of Britain from the 1970s to the present day. A look around the property that sheds light from different angles on the social, cultural and political realities, past and present, of British society. Karen Knorr will be exhibiting the a selection of works from the series Belgravia (1979–1981).

Although great gains have been made in the movement towards gender parity over recent years, there is still far to go. Working with Fast Forward: Women in Photography, photographers Karen Knorr and Anna Fox have been mentoring emerging Chinese photographers who are women. Fox and Knorr will be curating a new show from the body of work produced throughout the programme, shown in large scale in Mann Island Winter Garden, outside Open Eye Gallery.
