Artist Talk & Signing at Offprint 2024

Karen Knorr’s new monograph Country Life explores attitudes within the British aristocracy in the 1980s through a series of carefully structured black and white photographs and textual fragments.

Presented a masterfully printed outsized monograph, in a protective transparent PVC jacket, the title of the book Country Life reflects ironically upon a society magazine founded 126 years ago, which Knorr first came across at the homes of her parents’ white upper-class friends, which she noticed that its readership seemed mainly those well-heeled Sloane Rangers and debutantes who owned second homes in the British countryside and engaged in activities such as riding, fishing and hunting.

Knorr’s refined images were taken in London, Scotland and Oxfordshire in domestic interiors and gardens laid out according to the picturesque canons of the eighteenth century. The work was originally commissioned by The Photographers’ Gallery for a group exhibit entitled Britain in 1984, adding to her Privileged trilogy which also includes Gentlemen and Belgravia, both published by STANLEY/BARKER. Karen Knorr will be giving an artist talk and signing copies of both Country Life and the special edition box set Privileged at Offprint London on 19 May with STANLEY/BARKER. Further details can be found below.
